Mission of the Month: Whittier Narrows Park

Agents of Discovery is a unique opportunity to get really creative with education. If one can envision ideas and capture creativity and put it in an animated form and give it an educational component, the opportunities are endless. I feel this is a tool that is an open door. I am very excited to be a part of this educational platform.”

Colleen MacKay

Ranger, Whittier Narrows Nature Center

At Whittier Narrows Nature Center (WNNC), Missions are education-based with a big splash of fun! Everyone likes dinosaurs. There is a new dinosaur feature near the outdoor classroom. This feature is a replica excavation of the California State Dinosaur passed into law in 2017 by the California State Senate. The “Augustynolophus morrisi” was first discovered in 1939 in Fresno County, and the second in San Benito County. Ranger Raccoon escorts agents through the Mission and encourages curiosity and exploration. The Mission discusses various dinosaurs through history, their habitat and eating habits, as well as simple techniques and equipment used for excavations as a paleontologist.

Whittier Narrows’ upcoming Mission is named “Discover California.” It is based on 13 emblems representing the cultural heritage and natural treasures of the state. California became an official state on September 9, 1850, and joined the union as the 31st state. Many of the state’s emblems are naturally occurring at WNNC. For example, the state flower is the Golden Poppy. The State Reptile is one of the slowest “Animal Ambassadors,” the California Desert Tortoise. The “Discover California” Mission is a great opportunity for educators, families, and other visitors to learn and explore the state through the Agents of Discovery app. California contains mountains, beaches, deserts, and much more. Come and see what secrets await!

This summer, the “Agents of Discovery Squad” is cruising down the road and stopping to explore many sites. This program gives young Agents a chance to travel in a group around Los Angeles County and learn about the ocean, history, and legacy of sites in the area. This program is free and all are welcome. Learn more about the squad here. If you see them around LA County, smile and wave!
