Houston Parks Board

During unprecedented times, Agents of Discovery enabled Houston Parks Board to offer free and safe programming when more people turned towards green spaces than ever before. Agents of Discovery has become an engagement tool that allows us to connect with Houstonians in an accessible and equitable way.
Houston Parks Board is a nonprofit that works to connect all Houstonians through public green spaces. Their mission is to create, improve, protect, and advocate for parks for everyone. They work on projects big and small, including Bayou Greenways 2020 which connects 150 miles of trails along Houston’s major bayous. These trails bring 1.5 million Houstonians within 1.5 miles of a greenway.
Houston Parks Board strives to add meaningful engagement opportunities on the greenways to ensure all Houstonians feel welcome in their green spaces. The Agents of Discovery app is a key part of this engagement work. On the app, you’ll find “Missions” to play that teach you about different locations. Houston Parks Board currently has 2 fun Missions for users to explore: Explore MacGregor Park and Greens Bayou Summer Challenge!
Missions
Explore MacGregor Park Mission
This Mission is a great way to explore all the amazing amenities that MacGregor Park has to offer! Agents visit the Community Center, tennis center, basketball court, both playgrounds, and the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial. This Mission is part of the MacGregor Park master plan review process led by Houston Parks Board on behalf of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Friends of MacGregor Park, and MacGregor Park Conservancy. After families complete Challenges around the park, they are encouraged to join an upcoming community meeting to provide input on what they’d like to see in their park. Agents of Discovery is a great tool to implement a socially distanced walking tour of a space.
Greens Bayou Summer Challenge
Beginning just south of the Rockstar Energy Bike Park, the largest BMX complex in the U.S., this Mission highlights the greenway trail just south of the park. It challenges Agents to think like the birds, seeds, and trees along the way and think about how they survive and thrive during a hot Texas summer. Many Houstonians may not know about the beautiful northern reaches of Greens Bayou, and this is a great way to introduce this new green space and promote exploration.
